Watling Street Tour (A Coach Trip in Northamptonshire)

"Watling Street Tour" is a Coach Trip devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours. It is one of the morning trips, leaving at 9.30am and returning about 2pm.

These trips are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.

The coach will be leaving from St. Margarets Bus Station in Leicester Ciy Centre.

The format for these trips is that one stays on the coach almost all the time, while Colin gives a commentary. However, about halfway round, usually about 11.30am, there is a stop, where coffee, cakes ec can be bought.

Watling Street is one of the most famous of all the Roman roads. It ran from Richborough, on the Kent coast, through Canterbury; Rochester, where it crossed the Medway; London, where it crossed the River Thames; and then up into the Midlands, eventually leading to Wroxeter near Shrewsbury.

Much of Watling Street is today known as the A5, which for miles forms the boundary between Leicestershire and Warwickshire. A thousand and more years ago it was the frontier between English England, to the South and West, and Danish England, to the North and East, including Leicester.

Near the crossing point between Watling Street and the Fosse Way, another Roman road which ran through Leicester, the High Cross was set up. This can still be seen beside the road amongst a group of trees.

The Watling Street Tour looks at part of the road along this ancient boundary and into Northamptonshire, and at some of the intriguing towns and villages in the area.
