Barrow Deep Lock (Barrow-upon-Soar)
Barrow Deep Lock is a canal lock situated in the Leicestershire village of Barrow-upon-Soar.
It is the deepest lock on the East Midlands canal network.
The waterway is part of the Leicester Navigation, completed in the 1790s as an extension to the Loughborough Navigation.
Its purpose was to bring Nottinghamshire coal from the River Trent to Leicester, and from there to the outside world.
The navigation used the River Soar for much of its length.
But at Barrow, a cut was made, to avoid a long meander of the Soar through Quorn.
Today, the navigation is used by many pleasure craft, and it is a popular pastime to watch the boats go through the lock.
