Who is Santa Claus? (A Guided Walk in Mountsorrel)
"Who is Santa Claus?" is an unusual Guide Walk for the Christmas season, devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.
These strolls are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.
The starting point for the walk is the very popular Stonehurst Farm, on the old A6 road at Mountsorrel in Leicestershire.
At Christmas time, Stonehurst Farm is always especially full of seasonal cheer, and has even more visits than usual from family groups. In particular, there is always a crib, featuring real animals.
"Who is Santa Claus?" takes the form of a Guided Walk around Mountsorrel, which is a very attractive village set between Charnwood Forest and the River Soar.
Colin looks at the background to this ever popular but distinctly enigmatic character. Who really is he? Where does he come from? And how did he come to be in the Christmas story? You certainly won't find him in the New Testament.
The fact is that there are lots of strands to the creation of Santa Claus, or as many, including Colin, prefer to call him, Father Christmas.
On the way, we meet the benevolent Bishop St. Nicholas, Wotan (or Odin) and the Wild Hunt, Siberian shamans and their comprehensive use of the reindeer, and Wagner's music.
And in case you were wondering, we don't forget Jesus Christ and the story of his birth.
