Syston (A Guided Walk in Syston)

“Syston” is a Guided Walk devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.

These strolls are an excellent way of soaking up some Local History.

Syston is a small town to the North of Leicester.

The walk starts in Town Square in Syston, at the Bandstand. Town Square is a small pedestrian shopping area, which can be reached from Melton Road or High Street.

The route of this walk shows that there is more to Syston than the part which everybody knows – Melton Road, the main thoroughfare out of Leicester, which contains most of the larger shops.

The old High Street and the streets leading off it contain many picturesque old, sometimes thatched, cottages. St. Peter and St. Paul Church has some curious stone figures on the tower.

The walk includes not only the line of the prehistoric ridgeway running above the line of the River Wreake towards Melton Mowbray, but also the line of the Fosse Way, the Roman road which ran from Lincoln via Leicester and the Cotswolds to Exeter.

Syston can be reached by bus from Leicester and Melton Mowbray, and by train from Leicester and Loughborough.
