Cotswolds

The Cotswolds would probably win the vote for the most picturesque area of England.

Much of the area lies in Gloucestershire, but significant parts spill over into Oxfordshire and Wiltshire, and a little of Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

It is a region of gentle hills, broken up by delightful valleys with small rivers flowing into either the River Thames or the River Severn.

For centuries the main industry was sheep farming, and this resulted in the magnificent wool churches which are also a feature of East Anglia and Essex.

Today this beautiful landscape, with its mellow limestone buildings, has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Among the outstanding towns and villages, in terms of beauty, are Bibury; Broadway; Bourton-on-the-Water; Burford; Chipping Campden; Cirencester; Cleeve Hill; Moreton-in-Marsh; Painswick; Stanway; Stow-on-the-Wold; Upper and Lower Slaughter; and Winchcombe.
