Markets of Leicester (A Guided Walk in Leicester)
“The Markets of Leicester” is a Guided Walk devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours, who organises walks and Coach Trips throughout the year.
These strolls are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.
The walk starts outside the Town Hall in Leicester City Centre.
Leicester is an ancient market town, and Leicester Market is still held in its well-loved and thriving Market Place where it has been for centuries.
But there was another market area along High Cross Street, the town’s original High Street. It was here that the old High Cross was situated.
Not only that, but during the Roman period the forum had a market function. This was situated close to St. Nicholas Church and the Jewry Wall.
There were also, at various times, specialist markets for commodities such as horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and wood.
“The Markets of Leicester” visits many of the sites used for markets over the centuries, and should be of interest to anybody curious about Leicester’s history.
