Jitties of Barrow-upon-Soar (A Guided Walk in Barrow-upon-Soar)

“The Jitties of Barrow-upon-Soar” is a fascinating Guided Walk around the Leicestershire village of Barrow-upon-Soar, devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.

These walks are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.

The walk starts outside Holy Trinity Church, which can be found in Church Street in the centre of the village.

Barrow has a larger than usual number of interesting jitties. “Jitty” is a Leicestershire word for the urban paths that run between properties or along the edge of them. Where Colin comes from in Essex, these are known as alleys, but in other parts of the country they have a variety of names, such as twittens, ghauts, wynds, shuts, chares and snickelways.

The walk investigates many of the local jitties, including the extraordinary complex in the village centre, and the long closed but recently reopened example crossing the railway line near the former station.

There is also a stroll along the canal towpath. The River Soar had a long meander here, running through Quorn, and a cut was constructed to shorten the journey for the narrow boats.

Colin also leads a walk around the village itself, entitled “Barrow-upon-Soar”, and the village is touched on “Waterside Loughborough and Barrow-upon-Soar”, “Waterside Quorn and Barrow-upon-Soar” and “Waterside Mountsorrel”.
