Christmas Customs (A Guided Walk in Mountsorrel)

"Christmas Customs" is a special Guided Walk for the Christmas season devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.

These strolls are an ideal way to soak up some Local History.

The walk starts at Stonehurst Farm, on the old A6 at Mountsorrel.

Christmas is, of course, one of the most important events in the Christian calendar. However, although it is basically a religious celebration, many of the customs which we regard today as being part of Christmas do not really have any connection with the religious aspects.

Firstly, in case anybody has any doubts, Christmas celebrates he birth of Jesus around two thousand years ago. St. Francis of Assisi devised what has come to be known as the Crib, showing the Nativity scene, but using real people and animals. Stonehurst Farm has a Crib, and although there are no living people involved, it does use animals.

But what is the origin of Christmas trees? Or mistletoe? Or Christmas cards? Or Christmas crackers? Colin discusses all these and more on this highly unusual walk.

And the whole thing takes place on a delightful stroll around the charming village of Mountsorrel, famous for its Butter Cross and its granite.

Mountsorrel is served by buses from Leicester and Loughborough.

Other walks devised by Colin especially for Christmas include "Ding Dong Merrily on High". "Mediaeval Leicester at Christmas" and "The Ghosts of Christmas".
