A Glimpse of Heaven
"A Glimpse of Heaven" is a very attractive book, as well as a most useful reference book.
Written by Christopher Martin, with a foreword by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, it tells the story of Catholic church architecture in England and Wales.
It is a subject about which very little is written, but our Catholic churches and cathedrals feature some outstanding architecture.
Indeed, when most people speak of cathedrals, they mean Anglican cathedrals. It is often said, for example, that Nottingham, or Lancaster, or Shrewsbury, does not have a cathedral, but in fact each of these towns has a Catholic one.
Some of the places featured, in addition to those already mentioned, include Hereford, Derby, Birmingham and Marlow.
There are excellent photographs by Alex Ramsay.
