St. Marys Church (Snibston)

St. Mary's is the parish church of the tiny settlement of Snibston, near Coalville in West Leicestershire.

It is now part of a parish based on Hugglescote, which also includes Donington-le-Heath and Ellistown.

Today, most people who have heard of Snibston at all know it for Snibston Discovery Park, the very popular interactive museum on the site of one of George Stephenson's coal mines. The museum concentrates on scientific and industrial matters, with an excellent gallery on clothes and fashion.

The church has an isolated position, reached down the secluded St. Mary's Lane from the old turnpike road, which ran between Leicester and Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

St. Mary's is tiny. The nave and chancel, dating from the 12th century, together measure no more than 24 feet.

There is a 13th century font.

In 1930, the foundations of a long forgotten tower were discovered.
