Rothley Cross (Rothley)
The Rothley Cross is a very impressive Christian structure in the Leicestershire village of Rothley.
It stands in the churchyard of St. Mary and St. John Church, which it certainly predates, and is by far the oldest thing in the village.
The Cross was a preaching cross, where visiting priests would have gathered villagers to hear the Gospel.
It dates from the mid 9th century, when this part of England was under the political control of Mercia.
The Cross reaches the impressive height of 9 feet. The panels are interlaced, and on one is a stylised beast.
