Cattle Market (Melton Mowbray)
The Cattle Market has been for many years an important part of the business of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.
Animals were originally sold in the streets of the town. Sheep were sold in Nottingham Street, and the Beast Market (for cattle) was the other side of the Market Place, in Sherrard Street.
In the 19th century, however, public opinion, not least that of the influential hunting fraternity, demanded that all this be moved away from the town centre.
Accordingly, a new Cattle Market was constructed a few minutes walk away. So busy was it that one of the town's railway stations, no longer in operation, was sited nearby.
The Cattle Market is still very busy, and even draws tourists, particularly to see the cattle auctions. Many commodities are sold here, for the benefit of visiting farmers.
The Cattle Market is situated between Scalford Road and Nottingham Road.
