Snibston

[An image showing Snibston]Snibston is a hamlet in North West Leicestershire, on the outskirts of Coalville and of the Leicestershire coalfield, which is now part of the National Forest.

The best known feature is Snibston Discovery Park, close to Coalville town centre. This is a highly entertaining industrial museum, with displays on the Leicestershire clothing and fashion industries, and train rides through the grounds. It is built on the site of one of the collieries opened by the great engineer George Stephenson.

The old turnpike road between Leicester and Ashby-de-la-Zouch ran through Snibston, and the neighbouring settlements of Hugglescote, Donington-le-Heath and Ravenstone.

The tiny St. Mary’s Church dates back to the 12th century, and is reached by a lane from the turnpike road or by field paths from Donington-le-Heath.
