Maritime Essex Tour (A Coach Trip in Essex)
"Maritime Essex Tour" is one of the very popular Coach Trips devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.
These trips are a first rate way to soak up some Local History.
This tour concentrates on the maritime aspects of the ancient county of Essex, whose many estuaries and islands give the county one of the longest coastlines in England.
The coach leaves St. Margarets Bus Station, in Leicester City Centre, at 8am, and is due back about 9pm.
Colin gives his usual commentary along the way, pointing out places of interest and explaining their stories in a way that makes his excursions quite unique.
There are three stops of about an hour each.
Old Leigh is an ancient fishing and shipbuilding village on the Thames Estuary. Now a suburb of Southend, it retains its maritime charm, and is still famous for its seafood.
Burnham-on-Crouch is a sleepy little town on the estuary of the River Crouch. After Cowes, it is the most important yachting centre in England.
Maldon stands at the head of the Blackwater estuary, with the delightful Promenade Park beside the river, the unique triangular towered All Saints Church in the town centre and the wonderful sight of the Thames barges.
There is also a short stop at Battlesbridge, where the Crouch becomes tidal. This little village is now renowned as an antiques centre.
And from Leigh to Maldon, we are never far from the wonderful tang of the sea.
