Ely City and Riverside (A Guided Walk in Ely)
"Ely City and Riverside" is a Guided Walk devised and led by the well known Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.
Colin's walks are an enjoyable way of learning some Local History.
Ely is a very attractive market town and cathedral city on the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire.
Its name literally means "island of eels", which have existed in great abundance in the river for centuries.
Ely Cathedral, with its amazing mediaeval Octagon and Lantern Tower, is one of the outstanding buildings of England, and is much visited by tourists from this country and abroad.
The walk starts at The Gallery, beside the main entrance to the cathedral.
The party will view many of the outstanding features of Ely. Not only will they start the walk in the shadow of the cathedral, they will also see Oliver Cromwells House, St. Marys Church, various historic buildings in the Cathedral Close, the busy Market Square and the beautiful Riverside, with its multitude of pleasure craft and wildfowl.
There will also be discussions of many aspects of Ely's long history, involving such people as St. Etheldreda and Hereward the Wake.
Ely is easily accessible by train from Birmingham, Leicester, Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Stamford, Cambridge and Norwich.
