Major Archaeological Find in Leicestershire

A treasure hunter has made a major archaeological find in rural Leicestershire.

John Caluori of Newtown Linford made the find in a field at Gilmorton near Lutterworth.

The pair of shiny discs are 4,500 years old, and are made of gold. It is believed that they would have been used as earrings or hair ornaments.

Wendy Scott, finds liaison officer for Leicestershire County Council, said that similar discs had been found in Ireland and in Spain, but never in England, Scotland or Wales.

Ms Scott said "this is the oldest known metalwork in Britain".
