750 Years of Rochford Market
There was an event in Rochford recently, to celebrate 750 years of this little Essex town's market.
The charter was granted in 1257, and apart from a short break in the 20th century has been running ever since.
I have considerable connections with Rochford. For a start, I was born there! Then in the early 1970s I lived in the town, and among other local involvements I was Public Relations Officer for the Rochford Hundred Amenities Society. It was with this hat on that I donated the Colin Crosby Cup, which is still given annually for outstanding building or renovation. I also had an involvement with Rochford Carnival.
As a Blue Badge Guide, I still come down to the area from time to time and lead public Guided Walks, not only in Rochford, but also around Hadleigh (Essex), Leigh, Maldon, Prittlewell, Rayleigh and Southend.
I have also led a couple of walks on behalf of Rochford District Council, one year around Rochford and another year around Rayleigh. I also lead walks for clubs, and was in the area just a few weeks ago, when I led a walk around Rochford for Hockley and Hawkwell W.I.
The 750th anniversary event was held in the Market Square on Saturday 6th October. I was disappointed not to have been able to attend, but I only found out about it when walking through Rochford two days later and saw the posters!
Never mind. I'm sure it went well.
