City of Dan (Whitwick)
City of Dan is a street name in the former Leicestershire market town of Whitwick, near Coalville.
There are some very eccentric street names here, another of which is City of Three Waters.
A city locally means a group of people.
Dan was one of the tribes of Israel, and specifically one of the wandering tribes.
Gentlemen of the road, or tramps, would make when in the East Midlands for Whitwick, where the doss houses had a very high reputation. These gentlemen could reasonably be known as a wandering tribe.
By the roadside is the winding gear for the former Whitwick colliery, where there was a fatal disaster in the late 19th century.
