Tamworth Castle (Tamworth)
Tamworth Castle is an impressive castle at Tamworth in Staffordshire.
The castle was first built by Robert de Marmion shortly after the Norman Conquest. The red sandstone keep dates from this period, while the herringbone wall crossing the moat is from the reign of Henry I.
During the 15th century the castle passed to the Grey family of Groby.
The castle has a Tudor chapel and great hall with splendid roof and windows, and Jacobean state apartments.
There is a museum on the site.
Outside the castle stands a statue of Ethelfleda, Lady of the Mercians, who won back much of the East Midlands from the Danish invaders.
