St. Botolphs Church (Shepshed)

St. Botolph’s is the parish church of the little Leicestershire market town of Shepshed.

It is built on the highest ground in Shepshed, which is actually one of the hills of the extensive Charnwood Forest.

Much of St. Botolph’s dates back to the 13th century, including the tower, which has a fine broach spire, as well as an aisle and a porch from the same peiod.

During the 19th century, galleries were added, to cope with increased congregations.

There is a good collection of monuments to members of the Phillips family, of Garendon Abbey. Ambrose Lisle March Phillips de Lisle was the man behind the foundation of Mount St. Bernard Abbey, as well as the Catholic church at Whitwick.

The earlier church at Shepshed stood on the aptly named Kirk Hill.
