St. Nicholas` Church (New Romney)

St. Nicholas` Church is the parish church of the old Cinque Port of New New Romney in Kent.

It is a large church with a fine Norman tower, which rises to 100 feet.

Steps lead down to the West door, indicating the change in ground level. The church once stood beside the harbour, until the great storm that hit the South Coast in 1287, changing forever the course of the Rother estuary, leaving debris all over the town and leaving the shoreline a mile away.

There was a spire atop the tower, but this was demolished in 1772.

The three great wondows in the East end were inserted in the 14th century.
