Claremont Pier (Lowestoft)

Claremont Pier is one of a dwindling number of English seaside piers, a fascinating and much loved institution.

It is situated at the Suffolk resort of Lowestoft, pointing out into the North Sea.

Claremont Pier is one of two piers in the town, the other being South Pier.

It was opened in 1903, with a length of 760 feet, and a landing stage and pier head were added in 1913.

During the Second World War, it was used by a Czechoslovakian army unit as a training ground.

The actor George Studd bought the pier in 1950, after which it became chiefly popular with sea anglers.

A storm wrecked most of the pier in 1962, and although some restoration work was carried out and the pier partially reopened in the 1980s, further deterioration caused closure in 1992. It is now for sale.
