South Pier (Lowestoft)

South Pier is one of a dwindling number of English seaside piers, a fascinating and much loved institution.

It is situated on the North Sea coast at Lowestoft, the Suffolk resort which is the most Easterly point in England.

Lowestoft Harbour began to be developed from 1831, and South Pier, with a length of 1320 feet, was added in 1846. Of piers still in existence, only Ryde Pier is older.

From 1854 there was a reading room on the pier, but this was destroyed by fire in 1885 and replaced by a pavilion. This was badly damaged during the Second World War and subsequently demolished.

From the 1970s, many changes took place, and the pier was reopened in 1993.

Another pier in Lowestoft, Claremont Pier, has been closed to the public since 1999.
