Metal Tree (Leicester)
The Metal Tree is an abstract sculpture at the Belgrave Gate entrance to the Haymarket Centre in Leicester.
The sculptor was Hubert Dalwood, and it was unveiled in 1974.
The history of the sculpture began when a consultant surgeon, Paul Hickinbottom and his wife Catherine offered a sum towards the cost of a contemporary sculpture as part of the Centre, which was then under development. The Arts Council added a sum to the Hickinbottoms' gift.
The sculpture is designed to be analogous to the structure of the tree under which it stands, and is the only major abstract sculpture in the City Centre.
