St. Wilfrids Church (Kibworth)
St. Wilfrids Church at Kibworth serves the villages of Kibworth Beauchamp and Kibworth Harcourt.
It is situated just off the main A6 road between Great Glen and Market Harborough, on the street that leads down into Kibworth Beauchamp.
St. Wilfrids dates from the 13th century, and is constructed mainly of the glowing local ironstone.
There is a priests doorway that features dogtooth carving, and attractive sedilia and piscina.
The mediaeval tower and spire collapsed overnight in 1825. There is a story told locally of the little girl who got into trouble for telling her parents that she had jumped over the church spire.
The tower was rebuilt by the prominent Leicester architect William Flint, and completed in 1836.
St. Wilfrid was a Bishop from the North of England, associated particularly with Hexham and Ripon. During one of his periods of exile, he spent some time as Bishop in Leicester.
