St. Marys Church (Dunmow)

St. Marys is the parish church of the old Essex market town of Dunmow, properly Great Dunmow.

It stands a little out of the town, at the hamlet of Churchend, more in the country than the town.

The earliest part of the church is the chancel, which is early 14th century.

There is an expansive East window, with five lights, and the chancel has sedilia and a double piscina.

The West tower was formerly a detached building, and there is a two storeyed porch.

The South aisle has a 15th century wooden balcony.

There are monuments to members of the Beaumont family, including Sir Geoge Beaumont, the gifted painter who entertained artists of all sorts at his home at Coleorton in Leicestershire, and whose collection of paintings formed the basis for the National Gallery. He had been born at Dunmow.
