Shire Hall (Chelmsford)

The Shire Hall is one of the important public buildings at the heart of Chelmsford in Essex.

It is situated in Tindal Square, a stone's throw from Chelmsford Cathedral.

The Shire Hall was built in 1792, and the architect was John Johnson, the Chelmsford man who became County Surveyor of Essex.

The rear of the building adds to the dignity of the Cathedral Close.

The Shire Hall was built on the site of its predecessor, which had itself been erected in 1569.
