Newstead
Newstead is a village in Nottinghamshire, 3 miles from Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
Originally a priory founded by Henry II in 1170 for the Augustinian Black Canons, Newstead Abbey was converted after the Dissolution of the Monasteries into a 16th century mansion, and was restored in the 19th century in a Gothic style.
It was the home of Lord Byron, and contains memorabilia.
The West front and cloisters survive from the priory church.
Newstead Abbey was given to the city of Nottingham in 1931.
There are lovely lakes and gardens in an extensive parkland.
