High Cross
High Cross is a hamlet in Leicestershire, 5 miles from Hinckley.
It is the spot where two Roman roads crossed, Watling Street and the Fosse Way. The Romans regarded it as the centre of Britain, and thus the sacred omphalos.
There was never a proper town here, but there was a small Roman settlement named Venonae.
Hidden amongst the trees beside Watling Street (the modern A5) is a monument, erected in 1712.
