Brentford
Brentford is a district of West London, and an old market town which was formerly the county town of Middlesex.
It is on the River Thames opposite Kew, and grew up where the Great West Road crossed a ford over the River Brent.
St. Lawrence`s Church was rebuilt in 1762, although it retains its original tower.
Kew Bridge Steam Museum preserves the beam engines from the West London Pumping Station.
There is a museum of automatic musical instruments in a former church.
In Waterman`s Park is an arts centre.
Syon House, beside the river, was remodelled in the 18th century by Robert Adam.
It is believed that Julius Caesar crossed the Thames here, and Edmund Ironside won a battle against Cnut in 1016.
