Syon Park (Brentford)

Syon Park is an imposing house at Brentford on the outskirts of London.

The house is the London home of the Dukes of Northumberland, and their family, the Percys, have lived here for four centuries.

The site was originally a late mediaeval monastery, which was investigated by the Channel 4 TV programme "Time Team".

At the Dissolution of the Monasteries, a house was built here, the basis of the present house. Robert Adam added fine interiors, commisioned in the 1760s.

The park covers 200 acres, and was landscaped by Capability Brown. The spectacular Great Conservatory was designed in the 1820s by Charles Fowler.

Sir John Betjeman described Syon House and its grounds as "the Grand Architectural Walk".
