Melton Mowbray (A Guided Walk in Melton Mowbray)

"Melton Mowbray" is a Guided Walk devised and led by the well-known Leicester-based Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours, who leads walks and Coach Trips throughout the year.

These strolls are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.

The walk starts outside St Marys Church, which dominates the town centre.

During the walk, Colin will point out many places of interest in the town.

The church is a magnificent one, and could easily be mistaken for a cathedral. It has connections with the great conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent.

Melton Mowbray is world-famous as the centre of the pork pie and Stilton cheese industries. Both these foods are only made in and around the town, and there is an interesting connection between the two. Another famous local cheese is Red Leicester.

There are many animals, too, who enjoy food from Melton. The Pedigree Petfoods factory is here, making many famous brands including Kit-E-Kat and Chum.

Melton Mowbray is also a famous hunting centre. While hunting was legal, monarchs and nobility from all over the world came here to hunt and of course to be seen.

David, the Prince of Wales, met the American divorcee Mrs Wallis Simpson here. After he had become King Edward VIII, he abdicated in order to marry her, and was afterwards known as the Duke of Windsor.

Colin will also be pointing out various aspects of the town's markets and market crosses.
