Faith in Stamford (A Guided Walk in Stamford)
"Faith in Stamford" is one of the very popular Guided Walks devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.
These walks are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.
The outstanding English town of Stamford has a fine collection of mediaeval churches, and the walk covers all of them.
All Saints Church had as its Rector in the 18th century the famous antiquarian William Stukeley.
St. John's Church is where Sir Malcolm Sargent was a chorister as a boy.
St. Marys Church was the scene of an annual Mystery Play during the Middle Ages.
St. Martins Church has the magnificent collection of Cecil tombs and the graveyard of Daniel Lambert of Leicester.
Amazingly, all those four churches stood beside the sinuous path of the old Great North Road.
St. Georges Church has a wonderful collection of heraldic brass associated with the Order of the Garter.
There were also three friaries in the town, and a number of other churches which have been demolished over the years, as well as St. Leonards Priory, whose impressive ruins are on the edge of the town.
During this walk, Colin talks about an amazing number of places of worship.
Other walks on a similar theme are "Faith in Leicester" and "Churches of London".
Colin also leads "Stamford and All Saints", "Stamford and St. Martins" and "Waterside Stamford".
