St. John the Baptist Church (Whitwick)

St. John the Baptist is the parish church of Whitwick, the former Leicestershire market town which is now effectively a suburb of Coalville.

Access to the church is via a footpath from where Market Place becomes North Street, opposite Church Lane, and is close to the site of the Norman castle.

The church has a sturdy tower, and parts of the building date back to the 13th century.

A fresh water spring issues from beneath the church and flows into the Grace Dieu Brook, which formerly acted as part of the castle moat. This area was once known as the City of Jerusalem.

Colin Crosby’s Guided Walks in Whitwick start from the main entrance to St. John’s.
