The Beheading of John the Baptist (Westbourne)

The Beheading of John the Baptist is the parish church of the Sussex village of Westbourne.

This extraordinary dedication is shared with only one other church, at Doddington in Kent.

The ancient yew trees leading to the North door were planted in 1545, and constitute the oldest yew avenue in England.

There is a memorial in the chancel to Richard Barwell, who made his fortune with the East India Company and died in 1804. The memorial features an elephant`s head.
