Mountfichet Castle (Stansted Mountfitchet)

Mountfichet Castle is a reconstructed Norman castle at Stansted Mountfitchet in Essex.

It is on the site of an actual Norman castle, which belonged to Robert Gernon, a friend of William the Conqueror, and to Richard de Montfichet, one of the twenty five barons who had the responsibility of enforcing Magna Carta in 1215. In retaliation for this, King John ordered the castle to be destroyed.

It has been reconstructed, so far as possible accurately, and is now an interesting tourist attraction.
