French Row (St. Albans)

French Row is a narrow street, now pedestrianised, in the ancient cathedral city of St. Albans.

It leads from the busy Market Place to the open space containing the Clock Tower, formerly occupied by an Eleanor Cross.

The Fleur de Lys Inn dates from about 1440, and has a yard as well as a staircase which once led to a gallery.

It is on the site of an earlier building where King John of France was held prisoner after the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.
