Hopetoun House (South Queensferry)
Hopetoun House is a splendid house, and gem of European architectural heritage, at South Queensferry.
It has been described as "Scotland`s Finest Stately Home", and is situated on the Southern shore of the Forth of Forth.
The oldest part of the house was designed by Sir William Bruce and built between 1699 and 1707.
This was added to in 1721 by William Adam, who designed the magnificent facade, colonnades and state apartments.
The house is set in 100 acres of parkland, which includes woodland walks, a red deer park, a spring garden which always has a profusion of wild flowers, and picturesque picnic spots.
The Royal Drive, the main approach to the house, is only used by members of the Royal family.
Hopetoun House has been the home since 1699 of the Earls of Hopetoun, who were later created Marquesses of Linlithgow.
