English Bridge (Shrewsbury)
The English Bridge is one of the two major bridges bringing road traffic into the outstanding old town of Shrewsbury.
Each of the bridges crosses the River Severn, which almost makes Shrewsbury into an island. The English Bridge of course comes from the direction of England, and the Welsh Bridge from Wales.
The English Bridge was built by John Gwynn in 1769 and used by Thomas Telford to carry his main road from London into Wales. It was widened in 1927.
On the English side of the bridge is the historic Shrewsbury Abbey, and from here can be seen a wonderful view of the town's skyline.
