St. Andrew`s Church (Shoeburyness)

St. Andrew`s Church is the parish church of South Shoebury in Essex, which is now part of Shoeburyness.

The nave and chancel are Norman, including the South doorway.

The West tower dates from the early 14th century, and there is a 15th century timber porch.

Arthur Dent was incumbent at St. Andrew`s. He wrote "The Plain Man`s Pathway to Heaven", an important influence on John Bunyan`s "The Pilgrim`s Progress".

His name was later used by Douglas Adams for the hero of his "Hitchhiker`s Guide to the Galaxy" novels.
