Royal Harbour (Ramsgate)
The Royal Harbour is probably the best known feature of the Kent seaport, seaside resort and yachting centre of Ramsgate.
In a sheltered position on the Southern coast of the Isle of Thanet, it is surrounded by Georgian terraces on both the East Cliff and the West Cliff.
It was designated Royal Harbour in honour of a visit by George IV, who embarked from here in 1821 and visited again in 1827. An Obelisk records his visits.
There are many private yachts in the harbour, and John Smeaton`s dry dock, constructed in 1791, has been restored.
Small vessels from Ramsgate took part in the Dunkirk evacuation of 1940.
