St. John`s College (Oxford)
St. John`s College is one of the colleges that together form the famous Oxford University.
It is situated in St. Giles.
The college dates from 1437, being founded by Archbishop Chichele as a Cistercian college dedicated to St. Bernard, of whom there is a statue at the gatehouse. The Front Quad dates from this time.
It was refounded in 1555 by a City merchant, Thomas White, who dedicated it to St. John.
The Canterbury Quad was added by William Laud, who was to become Archbishop of Canterbury.
On the gatehouse is a statue of St. John the Baptist by Eric Gill.
