St. Marys Church (Newark)

St. Mary's is the splendid parish church of the historic old Nottinghamshire town of Newark.

Set on a small site close to the enormous Market Place, it soars high above the town and can be seen for miles.

The original church was founded by Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his more famous wife Godiva. But the rebuilding of the church in its present form dates back to the early 14th century.

By the 16th century, St. Mary's boasted sixteen guild and chantry chapels, and two of these survive on either side of the high altar.

The reredos is by Ninian Comper, and was commissioned in 1937.

Outside the South chantry can be found a fragment of a Dance of Death wall painting, with the warning once familiar to churchgoers "As I am today, so will you be tomorrow."

In the Lady Chapel is a 15th century set of sedilia, and on the wall a mosaic version of Van Eyck's "Adoration of the Lamb".
