St. Mary Magdalene`s Church (Launceston)

St. Mary Magdalene`s is the main church of the ancient town of Launceston in Cornwall.

It dates from the 15th century and was paid for by the wealth of local man Sir Henry Trecarrel.

The astonishing thing about the church is the unique decoration painstakingly chiselled from the hard granite over all the surfaces. It is believed that the masons came from Truro.

A local custom is to throw a stone at one of the figures on the wall, that of St. Mary Magdalene herself. If the stone lands on her back, this will bring good luck.
