Maritime Museum (Lancaster)
The Maritime Museum is one of the excellent atractions in the historic old city of Lancaster.
It is situated on the waterfront, at St. Georges Quay on the tidal River Lune.
The museum is housed in the handsome Custom House, built in the Palladian style in 1764 and paid for by Richard Gillow of the famous furniture company, who had made large profits from the import of hardwood from America.
There are displays on the history of the port of Lancaster, including the slave trade, and of the local fishing industry.
In an adjoining warehouse are exhibits concerning Morecambe Bay and the Lancaster Canal.
