St. Georges Quay (Lancaster)

St. Georges Quay is a very attractive, and today quiet, waterside area in Lancaster.

It is set beside the River Lune, and has a wealth of elegant buildings, many from the Georgian period.

Lancaster was, until the rise of Liverpool in the 18th century, England's major port for trade with America. Much of the trade, as with Liverpool and Bristol, involved the triangular circuit with African slaves as one of the commodities.

The Customs House, designed by Robert Gillow, is now an interesting maritime museum.
