Kirkstall Abbey (Kirkstall)

Kirkstall Abbey is a ruined abbey at Kirkstall, now a suburb of Leeds (Yorkshire).

It is one of the best preserved and extensive examples of a ruined Cistercian monastery in the country, and is now in a public park.

The abbey was founded, beside the River Aire, by monks from Fountains Abbey, starting in 1152 and being completed in 1182.

The rise in interest in the Romantic in the 19th century led to its rediscovery as a Romantic ruin.

The Reredorter has been restored, and is now a Visitor Centre, and the Gate House across the road contains a museum and restaurant..
