Kirkstall

Kirkstall is now a district of the Yorkshire city of Leeds (Yorkshire).

Kirkstall Abbey, beside the River Aire, was an important Cistercian abbey, dating from the Norman period, and founded by monks from Fountains Abbey in 1152. It was abandoned at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, but rediscovered in the 19th century as a romantic ruin.

Today, the extensive and impressive ruins are part of a public park.

Across the modern road, the Gate House contains a museum, as well as an excellent restaurant.
