Forty Hall (Enfield)

Forty Hall is a beautiful Jacobean house at Enfield.

It is situated at Forty Hill, not far from Capel Manor Gardens.

The house with its 273 acre estate occupies the site of Elsyng Palace, owned by both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

Forty Hall was built in 1629 for Sir Nicholas Rainton, the Lord Mayor of London, who had made his fortune as a haberdasher, largely through the import of silks and taffeta from Italy. It is Grade I listed.

Today, it is a museum and venue for a variety of festivals and events, while the estate includes a walled garden, a lake, formal gardens, wildflower meadows and a tea shop.
