Prebend`s Bridge (Durham)

Prebend`s Bridge is a bridge over the River Wear in the historic cathedral city of Durham.

It crosses the river, in its deep and picturesque gorge, just outside the Water Gate.

The bridge was constructed in 1778, after an earlier bridge had been washed away in a flood.

From the bridge, looking towards Framwellgate Bridge, can be seen a wonderful vista of the wooded sides of the gorge, with the tops of the towers of Durham Cathedral just visible over the trees.

It was this view that inspired Sir Walter Scott to describe Durham as "half church of God, half castle `gainst the Scot".
